HP 300 8/25/11 Introduction: Linking Theory, Research, and Practice What is health behavior? o Anything a person does that affects the person’s health status or risk of disease o Unprotected sex, exercise, smoking, etc. The ABC’s of Health Behavior o (1) Those personality characteristics, including affective and emotional states and traits o (2) Overt behavioral patterns , actions, and habits o (3) Personal attributes such as beliefs, expectations, motives, values, perceptions, and other cognitive elements o these relate to health maintenance, restoration, and improvement 3 Categories of Health Behavior o Preventative Health Behavior Activities performed by healthy people in order to stay healthy Important because they keep disease from spreading before it happens Screenings, vitamins, vaccines, etc. o Illness Behavior Activities performed by ill people to define the illness and discover a remedy Important to keep disease from spreading once it has occurred WebMD, going to the doctor, etc. o
