Several generations of parabolic troughs have been built, deployed and tested in systems producing industrial process heat and solar thermal electric systems. Trough systems employ a line-focusing reflector (see figure 8.2) to concentrate sunlight onto a receiver. The reflector (or the solar collector) tracks the sun in only one axis (east-west or north-south). It is a distributed receiver system with central power generation. 8.6.3 Parabolic Trough Systems
