Mexican independence, 1810-1821 o Napoleonic Wars – Spain is busy; cant do much to aid the colonies o Colonial Era Rebellions – small regional conflicts o F. Miguel Hidalgo – creole priest; had been greatly influenced about the idea of enlightenment. Viewed the role of the church was to aid the poor. Was accused of crimes and was moved to Dolores (west mexico) o Ignacio Allende o “literary clubs” – used these meetings to plot against the government o Grito de Dolores – Hidalgos Speech - 1810 – government found out the conspiracy, Hidalgo gave a famous speech to crowd (bringing them over by ringing the bells). Sept16 --- gathered a mob of 500, became 25000 as they gathered more; waived a flag of our lady of Guadalupe. Hidalgo and Allende had no control of their mob, they destroyed stuff. o Guanajuato o Monte de Las Cruces – epic battle – now numbered 60-80,000 ppl. – Spanish retreated to mexico city – hidalgo went back to the west, many ppl left the group – Spanish regrouped and caught up and captured Hidalgo and Allende. – faced
