IAH 221c: The City and Modernity Discussion Week 3 Reminders: Come to class next Tuesday to get your essay one assignment. You must be here  and  have a discussion question for your weekly attendance! What oppositions are at work in the film? utopia/dystopia, human/machine, upper class/lower class, boss/worker,  individual/crowd How are these represented aesthetically? Uses of costuming, lighting, makeup, music. How is the film an example of science fiction? Science fiction: something that is in the realm of possibility. vs. fantasy: something that is impossible. Important dates in history: 1914-1918 World War I 1926-27   Metropolis 1929  Stock market crash/beginning of Great Depression 1939  Hitler invades Poland to begin World War II Your Observations: Individuality becomes lost in crowds/mobs: one strong personality seems to have the ability to  control the entire group.  Crowds then shift blame away from themselves and onto the individuals
