The Age of Jefferson and the Expanding New Republic I.1796, Washington stepped down -who would succeed him? -candidates, john adams vs Thomas Jefferson John adams – federalist Thomas Jefferson – small central government Inconspicuous president (republican) 1796, smear campaign -neither candidate would admist they are running, ‘leaders of the republic should be virtuous’ John adams, president 1796-1800 -jefferson was 2 nd , so vice president 12 th amendment – ticket – pres. And v.p. together, to avoid contrasting views in office together Bad luck for adams (or anyone) to follow up Washington Threat of war with France, first real threat of Adams’ presidency John jay – signed really unfavorable treaty, the jay treaty -french hated this, felt it was a back room deal and had many unfavorable deals w/it Peace delegation sent to grance (they were threatening war) -3 french men wanted America to pay them to help them (bribery?) – the XYZ affair Quasi War (“kind of” war) -adams wouldn’t stand for this bribery, so he became popular Hamilton wanted war, at least troops set up -15,000 tropps put together Abigail adams -highly educated Alien and sedition acts -alien – foreign -sedition – actions or speeches intended to create rebellion against a government -passed by congress in 1798 -someone suspected of criticizing government
