Chapter 6- Evolution Phenotype o Genotype- an individual’s unique genetic constitution o Phenotype- outward expression of the genotype in the individual’s structure and function o Genetic variation Alleles- different forms of a gene Different blood types- A, B, O alleles in humans Eye color, determined by several genes acting together Each individual has 2 copies of each gene, one inherited from the mother and one from the father Heterozygous- an individual that has two different alleles of a particular gene o Blood type of AB Homozygous- two different alleles may produce an intermediate phenotype, or one allele may mask the expression of the other o Blood type of AA o Dominant and recessive alleles o Can also be codominant Gene pool- all the alleles of all the genes of every individual in a population Sources Mutation- changes to proteins o Results from any change in the sequence of nucleotides (adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine) o Substitutions, deletions or insertions of nucleotides
