Chapter 11- Population Growth and Regulation Demography- the study of people Population growth o Rate of growth on a individual basis is described as per capita o Expressed as a rate of multiplication o Use a continuous time approach to show it changes instantaneously Found more useful to use time intervals rather than continuous, discrete time approach Increase in time over intervals- geometric growth N(t)=N(0)(lambda^t) Continuous time growth relationship- exponential growth N(t)=N(0)e^rt Lambda=e^r Changes in population size (rate of change in population size)= (contribution of each individual to population growth) x (number of individuals in the population) rate= births-deaths+immigration-emigration o Age Structure Proportions of individuals in each age class Stable age distribution- age specific rates of survival and fecundity remain unchanged Life Table o Cohort/dynamic life table- follows the fate of a group of individuals born at the
