Shafaat Rahman 2/23/12 “American Literature 1700-1820” “Information to Those” Reading Response 9 – Literature The 18 th century was regarded as the Age of Experiment. Why you ask? Well that simply can be connected with the rise in science and philosophy. The end of the 17 th century marked the end of complete Puritan religious control of the colonies. The 18 th century started off with a mass migration from Europe to the colonies. Word of the great resources and freedom the colonies offered spread quickly throughout Europe. Instantly when locals of Germany and France were made aware of the possibilities, in no time were they paying to make trip by boat to the colonies. At the same time during this century, the likes of Isaac Newton’s scientific experiments and laws had finally started to be accepted by many people. Newton’s explanation of the coming together of the Universe as well as simple gravitational laws and other fields directly conflicted with religious views. The Bible stating that god had created everything around them, versus Newton’s
