Shafaat Rahman 2/28/12 “Introduction to Olaudah Equiano” “From the Interesting Narrative of the Life Olaudah Equiano” Reading Response 10 – Olaudah Equiano In the literature, in the eyes of Olaudah Equiano he sees the America as a land of savages that wish to devour him and his fellow comrades. In contrast to popular European belief of wishing to travel to America to benefit from the land’s riches, the Africans mention in this literature are very reluctant to step foot on American soil. In part also with the distance to the homeland they were born, through the horrific sights they witness with the flogging of many of their own for trivial acts, they see American’s as further barbaric. Equiano was not always given harsh floggings as on the path to America, he was sold to various masters which some gave him fair treatment with nothing more harsh than tying the hands and feet together to prevent the slaves from escaping. In the opening chapter Olaudah Equiano speaks of how his tribe was a very joyous one
