Varieties of Christianity 1/31/2012 EXAM 1—2/14 Paul’s Letters—50’s-60’s Our literature that we’re reading (Gnostics)—150’s Tatian—180 -In order to establish credibility, reach back to earliest possible source (gospels) -Problem is that the bible doesn’t say much about sex, but we know Jesus was pro- marriage, but many people assume he was celibate and most likely not married -Paul was a middle aged Pharisee -Denova finds it hard to believe that neither of them were married; a bachelor in Judaism is very uncommon -earliest witness for church fathers to gain authority was to go before the gospels to Paul’s teachings on sex, marriage, the body, and procreation (Corinthians) -Paul writes back to Corinthians original questions; this is what church fathers reference - Paul=APOCALYPTIC CHRISTIAN—proclaimed “repent, the Kingdom of God is coming”=God is returning again very soon -Paul took this literally as the end of the world as we know it; the world will be transformed and God will put it back to its original form -When Paul talks about sex, family, and marriage, it is based on his belief that the
