Appendix A HUM/176 Version 3 1 Midterm Exam . 1. What are the different forms of social media that exist today? Provide examples of different social media and their primary purposes. Different forms of social media include e-mail, blogs, video sharing, and forums. Articles in chronological, journal-like forms that are usually reader comments and links to other sites are called blogs. Wiki Web sites consist of information of just about anything and it allows readers to edit and contribute to the information. Facebook is one of the leading social media sites there is. It allows users to create personal profiles to share with family and friends. Users can upload pictures and videos, and chat with friends. Myspace, which is similar to Facebook, it allows users to upload music of their choice or even promote their own music as well. 2. What are the greatest benefits of social media for individuals and society? The greatest benefit of social media for individuals and society is keeping in touch with what is going on around you. To learn great and new innovations allows you to do many things such as advertising on the Internet, and learning new software through social media. Society benefits from social media by allowing businesses to advertise for their company and keep people updated with their business information, Internet users as individuals benefit from social media by communication. Communicating through social media allows you to stay connected with friends, family, co-workers, classmates, and information that you may need on a daily basis. 3. What are the greatest problems of social media for individuals and society? There can be some problems of social media for individuals and society. People gain information, education, news, etc., by electronic media and print media. Social media are distinct from industrial or traditional media, such as newspapers, television, and film. They are inexpensive, and anyone can access them. The greatest problems of social media for individuals and society are the dissemination of useless facts, rumors etc. The interaction can be addicting and has kept people from the normal social functions. Gossip about who did what or who is going to jail is all I see on the news sometimes. I think that we can fix this by not putting this type of media on the air.
