Emotional and Social Development Erikson’s third stage: initiative vs. guild o Approximately 3-6 years o Very eager, want to help o Learning to adapt eagerness to rules Control impulses o Self concept Usually based on external attributes Don’t think about if their a virtuous or moral person, they’re thinking about how well they perform at kickball, do they draw well, etc. Starts out global then specific – the fastest kid in the playground with apply that to their self concept. As they get older, they learn that that doesn’t mean they’re good at everything. o Self –esteem One’s feelings of self worth A combination of worthiness and competence (Mruk, 2006) High worthiness + high competence = high self esteem o More likely to be confident, feelings of worthiness and effectiveness Low worthiness + low competence = low self esteem o Unhappy, anxious, ineffective interactions with others The next 2 lead to a need to defend ourselves/this inadequacy High worthiness + low competence = defensive self esteem 1 o Self-centered, spoiled, rude, nasty Low worthiness + high competence = defensive self esteem 2 o Very anxious about failure, difficulty experiencing satisfaction after accomplishing something great, constantly prove their own worth Competence: how the world responds to us Gender development o Gender (what sex you are) identity – the understanding of their own gender 3 phases Gender labeling – placing individuals into 2 groups based on gender Gender stability – understanding that gender is stable
