A focus on the early origins of adult disease Early origins of adult disease – influenced by environmental factors, especially nutrition, acting in early life-program the risk for adverse health outcomes at adult i.e. CVD, diabetes, metabolic syndrome Critical Windows of maternal nutrition and the pathway to adult obesity there is a J or U shaped relationship between birth weight and adult fat mass o higher prevalence of adult obesity occurring in individuals with birth weights at either the low of high end of the birth weight distribution maternal weight is a major determinant of the relationship between birth weight and adult BMI fetal nutrient supply are important in determining body composition in utero and later in life high nutritional comsumption or body fat mass during pregnancy is associated with induction of a degree maternal insulin resistance, and increased fetal nutrient supply, fetal overgrowth and infant fatness increase in fetal nutrient supply = increased risk of childhood or later obesity
