1 Raymond Milek SID#0483682 12/09/2011 American History 2 HIS-114 Thomas Edison State College October, 2011 Semester Position Paper Outline The topic I have chosen for my position paper is the question, “What Did the Ku Klux Klan Really Want?” I have a great interest in this topic, not only because I am fascinated by the KKK and their actions, but also because I have troubles at times wondering if I have racially biased ideas. My girlfriend, who happens to be of mixed race, suggested that I choose this topic as soon as the page was pulled up. I was never racist as a child, but after spending time in prison, where there are incarcerated individuals of all race, I began to develop disdain for certain racial groups. I am not ignorant enough to believe or generalize that all people of a race or ethnicity are the same. I do, however, know the difference between inner-city minorities that have lived in poverty and dilapidated areas, and minorities that grew up in the suburbs with advantages and privilege. With this said, my interest in the KKK and what their real motives or goals are is piqued after seeing both sides of different races, ethnicities, and cultures. I want to know if they are ignorant “rednecks” or if they are disillusioned members of society that want to truly protect their own race, just as every other race has done for millennia. Is it all based in hate and ignorance, or is there actually an admirable motive behind the white hood? Every other group
