Raymond Milek-10/22/11 SID #0483682 SOS-110 Thomas Edison State College October, 2011 Semester Written Assignment 2 In today’s world of modern technology, one does not have to look much further than their home computer to do research. The internet has allowed us all to simply type in a few words, click a button, and we have the knowledge of the entire world at our fingertips. But when do we know if this information is reliable? On average, I have found that most search engines provide thousands of links when a simple word or phrase is put into a search engine. The choices seem endless. However, there is another way to do research on the internet. Databases are another place to do your searching, and while they almost always provide fewer results, the links they do provide seem to come from more reliable, scholarly sources. When compared and contrasted, we will see what the differences are in both of the aforementioned research sources. Search engines, such as Google, seem to be the most popular form of research on the web. In June, 2011, the internet reportedly had 2.11 billion users, which is 30.4% of the world’s population ( www.internetworldstats.com -January 1
