We make assumptions about how a system works; these assumptions constitute a model. Models are used to gain some understanding of how a system behaves. Some models might be simple use analytical (mathematical) methods to obtain exact information on questions of interest. Most systems are too complex to obtain analytic solutions use simulation to evaluate the model numerically. e.g. A manufacturing company wants to build a large extension onto one of its plants. Is it cost-effective? Would not construct it and then remove it if it doesnt turn out to be cost- effective!! Simulate instead! IEOR 4404, Lecture 1 2 Application areas of simulation Designing and analyzing manufacturing and inventory systems Determining hardware requirements or protocols for communication networks Determining hardware and software requirements for computer systems Designing and operating transportation systems such as airports, freeways, ports and subways Evaluating designs for service organizations such as call centers, fast-food restaurants, hospitals and post offices Analyzing financial or economic systems; pricing complex financial instru- ments IEOR 4404, Lecture 1 3 Some definitions Definition: A system...
