Technical Document Analysis: Carolyn Dunn Figure 1 shown below is a photograph of a sign hanging outside the hospital in Latrobe, Pennsylvania where my mother had her recent surgery. When I saw it, I took a picture of it with my phone, thinking that since we were not meeting face to face, that I would “do the homework” along with you and analyze a piece of technical communication that I came across in my daily life. The sign itself is hanging on a column outside the main entrance to the hospital. It was perhaps two feet long and one foot wide, and it was hung at eye level on the column – which made it easy to spot. It is designed to warn people walking on the sidewalks outside the hospital that there could be icy spots on the pavement. The triangles that are blue in the picture only turn blue when the temperature dips below freezing – 32 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature is above freezing, the triangles are all white.
