1) Discovering Psychology a) i) Psychology systematic, scientific study of behaviors and mental processes. ii) Goals (1) Describe behavior (2) Explain behavior (3) Predict behavior (4) Control behavior (opt.) b) Modern Approaches i) Approaches to understand behavior psychobiological, cognitive, behavioral, psychoanalytical, humanistic, and cross-cultural. ii) Each approach has different perspective and may involve a different technique of study. (1) Psychobiological approach how genes, hormones, and nervous system interact w/ environment to affect psyche. (2) Cognitive approach how brain processes, stores, and uses info. (3) Behavioral approach how organisms behave depending on reward/punish system. (4) Psychoanalytic approach unconscious conflicts affect real-world traits (5) Humanistic approach everyone has freedom in directing future, ambition for achievement, and pride.
