Chapter 4 – 9/11/09 How is the structure of a membrane related to its function? o Membrane function Selectively isolates inside of the cell from the outside Regulates exchange of substances in and out of the cell Facilitates communication w/ other cells o Membrane proteins Transport proteins: regulate movement through membrane Channel proteins Carrier proteins Receptor proteins: trigger cellular response when specific mols attach Recognition proteins: ID tags and attachment sites Glycoproteins o In a phospholipid bilayer, hydrophobic tails of phospholipids are sandwiched between hydrophilic heads. How do substances move across membranes? o Transport processes Passive transport: movement down concentration gradient; no energy required Simple diffusion: goes across membrane without help Facilitated diffusion: goes across membrane with help from proteins Osmosis: water moves through differentially permeable membrane o Diffusion
