Title of the Seminar: PASSIVE OPTICAL NETWORK: Prime Vehicle for Broadband Delivery
Speaker: Engr. Rafaelito Santiago
Speaker’s Company: Converge: ICT Solutions INC.
Company Profile:
Converge is one of the latest and fastest growing in the Philippine telco market. According
to the speaker, their goal is to provide services such as fiber optic networks and fiber internet to
ensure fast internet services to their consumers. With a low price to boot, their company provides
unlimited and stable internet. As of now, their operations are limited to six (6) places: Metro Manila,
Pampanga, Tarlac, Cavite, Rizal and Bulacan.
Observations/ Learnings:
As the broadband services grow, so does the consumer’s consumption of bandwidth. Engr.
Santiago gave us a background how bandwidth consumption evolved throughout the years. Public
Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) only used 56kbps back in the day. Then came Integrated
Service Digital Network (ISDN) followed by ADSL and ADSL2. The Next-Generation Passive
Optical Network 2 (Next PON) now uses 100Gbps. The difference between 56kbps and 100Gbps
just shows how far the advancement has become. He also added that with the use of fiber, internet
speed becomes significantly faster since they ensure that no data is loss during transmission.
Technologies /Equipment:
The Gigabit Passive Optical Network or GPON technology was featured due to it being low
cost, low maintenance and greater quality. One of its main features is that it is highly capable of
