Brief Summary Mary and John are in the process of getting married, but before they get married, Mary and John are attempting to solve financial issues along with relationship issues. Mary feels as if she has been taken advantage of by John because of some of the choices he has made without consulting her, for instance, John chose to buy a brand new “fully loaded” vehicle even though they have more serious financial issues to take care of. Mary believes she has given up a lot for John considering that she had to move her life to Fort Myers even though she was offered job opportunities in New York for immigration law. Moving to New York would have helped her career tremendously but she chose to be with John and make do with the situation. From Mary’s point of view, she has had to sacrifice a lot in the relationship so she would like to be rewarded with a nicer home. John on the other hand would prefer to pay off as much debt as possible that he and especially Mary have accrued over the years. John and Mary would both like to pay at least 20% down on the home in order to avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI). Again, Mary and John are both conflicted on how to use the $10,000 wedding gift from Mary’s father and the $15,000 Mary and John have saved up. Mary is also questioning whether or not she should listen to John’s secretary and not tell John of his possible promotion. At this point in the relationship, John and Mary have a lot of hidden problems and secrets due to a lack of communication which is putting unneeded pressure on their upcoming marriage. Preparation Our main concern in attempting to prepare the negotiation was being sure to choose the best price for the house while also meeting John’s need to pay off some of the accrued debt and still have a slight amount of money left over in the end. Sudden Preparation Form Mary’s interests At least $100,000 home Keep the relationship/marriage in good standing Finding a career that will pay well and advance her career Not staying in Fort Myers where the job market is at a downfall Keep the trust fund intact in order to not upset her father
