Unformatted text preview: America Compared #11 • Women important in progressive movement • Britain’s gov’t more controlling in reform o No role for women to play • Women found other ways to influence public policy • Well educated women influenced o “reservoir” of educated talented women who couldn’t do anything besides commit to welfare • Late 19 th century – 36% women graduates in universities • b/c of boundaries women got into reform movement (progressive movement) • results came from women working at local level • WCTU-womens Christian temperance union o Origins in anti-alcohol movt o By 1900 org. branched out (more than temperance) o Most influential women’s org. in the country (100 of thousands of women) o Into women’s sufferage and other reforms • National Consumers League o Help consumers make good choices o Try to find ways to protect families from impure foods, drugs, etc., • Federation of Women’s Clubs o Umbrella organization • Women active @ local level • Irony: womens policy began to diminish in the 1920s and 1930s o Great Depression: The New Deal (social welfare by gov’t) Origins of Progressivism • Begins with reforming women • Progressive movement o Nearly everyone from 1890s to 1920s were a part of some form of reform o Widespread o Richard Hofstadter Mid of 20 th cent. = giant Taught @ Columbia Intellectual historian (wrote a lot about ideas about American life) 1 st book = collection of essays American Political Tradition (1947) • Essay about Progressives • “Progressive Profile”- list of character. to identify progressives o Seem to be middle-class maybe “affluent” o Young (under 50 grown up since civil war and with industrialization) o Urban backgrounds (towns or cities)...
