Histology of Bone Histology of Bone: Cells Osteoblast Derived from osteoprogenitor cells Secrete matrix Mainly collagen Found in surfaces of bones No mitotic potential Responsible for bone formation Osteocyte When the osteoblasts become trapped in the matrix they secrete they become osteocytes Are “old” osteoblasts Maintain day to day activity Found in compact bone No mitotic potential Osteoclast Derived from circulating monocytes Break down bone matrix because Produce an acid to break apart minerals Enzymes breaks down collagenous fibers Found in the outer layer of the bone Just below periosteum Osteoclasts resorb bone
