Location: Palace, caverns, and battlefields in Scotland; Palace of King Edward in England, Middle Ages (11 th Century) Major Scenes: The three witches prophesize that Macbeth will become the next king after and King Duncan, and Banquo’s sons will take the throne after Macbeth (1.3). Duncan praises Macbeth for his efforts in battle, and visits Macbeth’s home (1.6). Macbeth murders King Duncan in his sleep, and Lady Macbeth frames the servants with bloody daggers (2.2). Macbeth takes Duncan’s place as king, while Duncan’s sons, Malcolm and Donalbain flee to different countries (2.4). Macbeth sends murderers to kill Banquo and his son, Fleance, but Fleance escapes (3.3). Macbeth goes back to the three witches out of fear, wwhere three apparitions inform him about his near future (4.1). While Macduff is gone, Macbeth sends murderers to slay his entire family (4.2).
