Dialectic Journal 1. “Fair is foul, and foul is far.” (1.1.12) 2. “The instruments of darkness tells us truths/ win us with honest trifles, to betray’s/ in deepest consequence.” (1.3.125-128) 3.”Like our strange garments, cleave not to their mold/ but with the aid of use.” (1.3.146-147) 4. “The service and the loyalty I owe/ in doing it pays itself.” (1.4.23-24) 1. This quote immediately introduces the idea that appearances are not what they seem to be. This quote basically means that the foul things in the world are actually the opposite, which is fair. 2. Banquo uses the word darkness to represent the witches. He believes that darkness hides inside the words of the witches. 3. This introduces the idea of borrowed robes. Macbeth is in a higher position then what he is accustomed to, so this can bring possible problems in the future. Banquo assures Macbeth, that with time, his robes will fit. 4. Macbeth puts on a fake appearance for King Duncan so he would not come off as doing anything suspicious. Macbeth does this because he already has planned the king’s murder.

Look like th’ innocent flower,/ but be the serpent under’t.” (1.5.64-68) 6. “Is this a dagger which I see before me,/ The handle toward my hand?” (2.1.33-34) 7.” Why did you bring these daggers from the place?/ They must lie there. Go carry them and smear/ the sleepy grooms with blood.” (2.2.46-48)
