Samuel Castrejon Period 0 12/11/11 Syllabus Week #13 The Rise of Realism Before the Civil War, American Literature had focused on the adventured of the exaggerated heroes of Romantic Novels. The new literary movement known as Realism moved away from the subjects and concerns of Romantic Fiction There were great authors that formed a strong disliking towards simple realism, authors such as Hawthorne, Melville, and Poe. These authors believed that Romantic elements would entertain readers and also reveal truths that would have been hidden in a real story. After the conclusion of the Civil war a new age of writers known as Realist emerged and took dominance in the world of American Literature Realism’s objective was to explain why people behaved the way do; Realist relied on science and observations to answer their questions. Realist drew their test subjects from the slums of growing industrial cities, they used corrupt politicians, prostitutes, and poor factory workers as their test subjects. Stephan Crane was one of the most well known of these Realist and Crane was most interested in the mind of a human during the moments of stress. Crane was one of the first to put human illusions and the indifference of the universe together and he was also one of the first to describe a stabbing death. Analyzing a Photograph There are several criteria in analyzing a photograph in terms of Realism. The first criteria in analyzing is whether or not the photographer forced those being photograph to pose or not. The second criteria in analyzing is to notice if the photograph illustrates the principals of a Realist or a Romantic. The third criteria in analyzing a photograph is to
