R-selected species can also have exponential growth in some aspects of its growth. Density-dependent controls slow down the population growth as the population gets closer to k. Human Population Growth -We are reaching seven billion people around mid-2011. The growth rate varies significantly among countries and the annual increase is 1.26 %. (positive r) - Thomas Malthus- wrote essay on population growth and said the growth increases geometrically and states the food supply is only increasing in a linear fashion and at one point, the population growth will outpace the food supply. It took until 1830 to reach 1 billion people. - U.S. Resident population- 311,946,755 (4.5% of world Population. 25% of resources used by U.S. Residents.
