Brennan Woods September 23, 2010 Dr. Miller TTH 3:50-5:05 Mosque Law Brief Facts In December 2009, plans for the Cordoba were submitted to The New York Times. Over the last year and nine months, Americans have been involved in a deep debate over The Cordoba project now known as the Park 51. The name was chosen because Muslims, Jews and Christians created a center of learning in Córdoba together (The Economist). The building is a planned multi-story community center and mosque for those who participate in the Islamic faith. Its proposed location is about two blocks from the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. The debate over whether or not the mosque should be allowed has caused great tension. Most of the conflict comes from politicians and the mosque leaders. Those politicians who are against it believe that the Mosque establishment would be disrespectful to those who lives were lost during the September 1, 2001 terrorist attacks. Those opponents have also said that the building itself would serve as a "victory memorial" to Islam. Those who support say the Mosque worshipers are not of those of practice radical practices. They believe that the Mosque should serve as a peace offering in a place that matters the most (Daisy Khan). Law There are no official’s laws within the United States or New York that states that the building of the Mosque is prohibited. President Brack Obama has taken a stance on saying that “as a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone
