20 October 2007 Mrs. JoAnn Scales Section 4 Tuesday 1-4 pm MSE 232 Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN 37235 Dear Mrs. JoAnn Scales, The results of the column buckling lab, performed on October 16, 2007, are contained within this letter. The purpose of this lab was to demonstrate the strength of different materials for use as columns. The materials used in this experiment were Column fixtures with digital vernier calipers, hydraulic load frame with computerized data collection system, 8 samples of various slenderness ratios of annealed steel, and aluminum, 5 samples of various slenderness ratios of birch and nylon. To begin the experiment each sample was measured to ensure the correct diameter and length were recorded. Once a sample was fully measured it was loaded into the hydraulic testing machine and the computer was set to record the maximum load applied. The frictional load was obtained by Dr. Robin and will be subtracted from the maximum load recorded. This process was repeated for all the specimens. Looking at the graphs, one can see that each material roughly follows the
