10 October 2007 Mrs. JoAnn Scales Section 4 Tuesday 1-4 pm MSE 232 Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN 37235 Dear Mrs. JoAnn Scales, The results of experiment six, bolted joints, performed on October 9, 2007, are contained within this letter. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the strength of different types of bolted joints. The materials required for this lab are Three types of bolted joints, hydraulic load frame, grips for bolted joints, and digital vernier calipers. The first step of the experiment is to measure the joint dimension of each of the samples. Since each sample is a different joint it is only necessary to measure what is needed for the calculations. After the measurements were taken, the theoretical failure for each sample failure load was calculated. The group then loaded a sample into the load frame to determine the actual load of failure. Once this data was recorded, the theoretical value for failure was compared with the actual value. The results of the failure test were surprising close to the theoretical values for the
