05 November 2007 Mrs. JoAnn Scales Section 4 Tuesday 1-4 pm MSE 232 Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN 37235 Dear Mrs. Joann Scales, The results of the strain gages and pressure vessels experiment, performed on September 30, 2007, are contained in this letter. The purpose of this lab was to introduce strain gages using a thin walled pressure vessel, in the case of this lab an aluminum soda can. The materials needed to do this experiment are unopened soda cans, strain gages, sandpaper, ethanol, Q-tips, super glue, latex gloves, transparent tape, thermocouple, and pressure pump. To begin the experiment an unopened aluminum soda can is obtained and prepared by sanding the paint off of an area about the size of a quarter. The area of the can that is sanded was then washed with ethanol to clean off the oil residue from contact with skin. Latex gloves need to be worn when dealing with ethanol for safety purposes. Then a strip of tape is applied to the strain gage, which is attached to the can. The tape is peeled off to a point just past the strain gage and a single drop of super glue is
