CEEN 641 – ADVANCED SOIL MECHANICS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT #15 1. A soil profile consists of clayey silt overlying saturated clay. A vane shear test is conducted in the clay at a depth of 10.5 m, obtaining a peak torque of 1.55 N-m and torque of 0.13 N-m after the vane is rotated 10 times. The vane is 6.5 cm in diameter and has a height-to- diameter ratio of 2. An undisturbed companion sample has a liquid limit of 27, a plastic limit of 19, and a natural moisture content of 35%. Determine the following for the soil. a. The liquidity index, LI b. The undisturbed (peak) shear strength (with units of kPa) c. The remolded shear strength (with units of kPa) d. The sensitivity of the soil, S t e. Based on the results from parts a and d, express any concerns you might have regarding performance of this soil during a small to moderate earthquake. 2. Determine the area ratio for the Dames and Moore split-spoon sampler (shown below without the snub-nose tube attachment at the shoe which should be used (but often isn’t) when sampling soft soils). Based on your results, comment on the degree of sample disturbance expected using this sampler with the configuration shown. 3. Please complete the attached mid-term course evaluation.
