Mona Shen 1 The 1903 Model A. Ford The industrial revolution of the 19 th century brought about many new innovative inventions, one of which was the automobile. The first man to capitalize on this newborn car industry was Henry Ford by starting the Ford Motor Company in 1903. Later, Ford’s introduction of the assembly line to efficiently build automobiles reduced their prices. With the rise of the middle class after the industrial revolution, the trend of more Americans buying cars brought about new suburbs and new lifestyles. The primitive automobile pictured here is the 1903 Model A. Ford. It formerly belonged to the Smith family who lived in New York during the early 20 th century. Shortly after purchasing the car for $750, which is equivalent to $17,000 today, the Smiths moved into a newly formed suburb of New York City. Even though John Smith worked in the city, his car gave him the ability to commute back and forth from his house to his job. On the weekends, his wife no longer
