Mona Shen Report Card of Nixon and Carter Nixon Period 1: B Nixon rightfully began withdrawing Americans troops from Vietnam through the Nixon Doctrine, or Vietnamization. Nixon also helped develop the Paris Peace Accords, thereby ending most of the violence. However, North Vietnam still became Communist, and the U.S. had been trying to prevent any manifestation of Communism. Furthermore, Cambodia was invaded. Period 2: C Although Nixon’s original plans were to benefit the people, there were negative consequences. Some Johnson’s programs were shut down and money was impounded from Congress. Also, state governments did not like meeting federal requirements. Period 3: A- Apart from visiting China, there is one other thing that only Nixon can get accomplished: peacefully desegregating schools in the South. While doing so, he helped fund Southern schools and kept in mind the need for Southern votes. Period 4: A- Nixon helped loosen tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union using the policy of détente and attending the Summit. In SALT, nuclear inventory of both countries were reduced.
