Review: Speech Acoustics ± Spectral analysis: Gives amplitude of speech at each frequency. ± Line spectra: A description of the spectra of vowel sounds owing to their rough periodicity. ± Fundamental frequency: Frequency of repetition, ‘pitch’ frequency. Conveys information regarding gender, size and prosody ± Harmonics : Integer multiples of the fundamental frequency ± Formant frequencies: Major resonance frequencies. Identifies the vowel. ± Turbulence spectra: A description of the spectra of most consonant sounds owing to their nonperiodicity. ± Speech spectrogram: Plot of changes in the speech spectrum over time. ± Acoustic phonetics: The study of sound waves made by the human vocal organs for communication. ± Problems of speech recognition: Segmentation, talker variability, context variability (coarticulation).
