1 FIRST Mid-Term Brief Review Guide 1. Introduction: Linguistics, Language, (class notes, 1 st discussion section and Pinker Chapter1 & movie) Linguistics is the scientific study of language, i.e. the ability to speak and understand a human language. We discussed some of the hallmark properties of this ability e.g. species specificity, innateness, genetic encoding. You should understand these notions and give reasons why linguistics think that Language is characterized by these properties. You should understand the concepts of descriptive vs. prescriptive grammar. What is Linguistics? What is Language? What properties distinguish human language from other systems of communication?
