Community Observation Paper Liberty University Sociology 200 Instructor E. Cox Introduction The observation took place at the MUST Ministries Homeless Shelter and Soup Kitchen. In this observation paper, the author will attempt to discuss the issue of homelessness. With the economic downturn, one would expect the homeless rates to rise, however, according to The National Alliance to End Homelessness the rate actually dropped by 1 percent. The drop in the rate is most likely from the increase of the amount of funding the Federal Government has been spending on homelessness. the needs of the population of the homeless and what can be done to help make a difference in the homeless population? What did the author experience during the observation? The shelter doors open at 11 am. Before that, the individuals that require the services start lining up at 7 to 8 AM. The sad thing about this situation is that the shelter cannot accommodate all the people that need services. The shelter can only serve one hundred individuals for overnight says. For the individuals that are lucky enough to receive services they can stay for up to two weeks. Each day they must leave the shelter at 9 A.M. to look for work. However, if the individuals that
