Natalie Yu (,Tsz Sum) 4. Define and illustrate the following terms: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and discourse. To start briefly, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics are the different aspects that linguists study in the structure of language, words and sentences. Phonology, according to Salzmann, is the study of the phonetics and phonemics of a language and of the sound changes that take place over time in a language or in several related languages. And a language’s phonetics and phonemics are coined to express the two standpoints of an outsider and an insider respectively. In other words, phonology is the study of the principles that govern the way sounds are organized in languages i.e. sounds that interact. One of the key categories of phonology is the study of phonetics – the study of speech sounds and a science attempt to describe all the sounds used in the languages of the world.
