PROCEDURE: PART A – Locating Software Drivers 1. Make sure the Black Dell GX270 computer has been re-imaged with the proper software or you will not be able to get this lab operational. Software Drivers 2. When installing an operating system onto a computer system there are often hardware devices for which the operating system cannot locate an appropriate driver in its driver database. This can occur when the hardware device is newer than the operating system or device has too small a market presence for Microsoft to include a driver in on its update web site. 3. Software drivers play a very important role in system integrity since drivers are incorporated into the operating system at a level where they can compromise the system’s operation it is essential that drivers are well engineered and have undergone proper testing. Not only can drivers affect system integrity they can also have a dramatic effect on system performance and features. 4. When considering a hardware upgrade to a network server always locate the most reliable hardware and driver software you can find, including Microsoft Signed drivers. When working with a single user computer you may want to give up reliability for performance or features in which case you would utilize the vendor’s latest driver. Always remember inserting a cheap expansion device such as a $20 modem may not cause a hardware problem but the supporting driver of a cheap device has the ability to comprise system integrity as well as slow down your system’s performance. Identify what Driver are missing 5. Start at the device manager and see what you can discover about what devices are not working. Locate all the devices that are without a correct driver and record them here and in your results sheet. _______________________________________ _________________________________________ _______________________________________ Note: If the device had a red X on it would most likely not be a driver but a hardware problem and require that you run system diagnostics software or try replacing the card. Determining detailed device identification information 6. Device manager gives very little information about the hardware devices missing their drivers other than their basic function. The BIOS on this computer is no help it also gives no information about the devices and their missing drivers. 7.
