Emil Gulko CHEM 2204 TA: William Thompson Bowie Lab Performed: 08/31/20 Lab Due: 09/14/20 Expt 15: Diels-Alder Reaction: 9,10-Dihydroanthracene-9,10- , -succinic Acid Anhydride Objective: The purpose of this experiment is to explore the role of an aromatic ring system as the diene substrate in this addition reaction. The reaction studied in this experiment is an example of a 1,4 addition by an activated alkene dienophile across the 9,10 positions of anthracene. Experimental Procedure: The procedure was followed as described in Mayo, pages 271-272, with the modifications listed in the Canvas document. Additional modifications to the procedure included the following: Substitute Drierite (anhydrous calcium sulfate) for calcium chloride in the drying tube. At the end of the experiment, the cotton and Drierite from the drying tube maybe disposed in the regular trash bin. Heat the reaction mixture at reflux for 30 min by immersing in a sand bath at 180-185 °C .DO NOT EXCEED A SAND BATH TEMPERATURE OF 200 °C!
