Unformatted text preview: Soc 183 Session 9 A Comparative Perspective: Race in Latin America Take Away Points for Telles • Race is constructed differently in the U.S. and Brazil. • There is a greater history of interracial mixing between people of African and European and indigenous ancestry in the Brazil than in the United States. Racial Democracy • The idea that what makes Brazil distinct is that there has been vast amounts of miscegenation which has blurred the line between black and white. This is something that Brazilians had taken pride in and used as evidence for a lack of a “race problem” in Brazil. • Gradually scholars began to criticize this view, and it is now widely recognized that racism and racial inequality exists in How is Race Different in Brazil and the U.S.? • The history of race mixture in brazil has led to a vastly different system of racial classification in the two countries.
