By something else, Glad well meant that the increase of cases of crime in New York as a result of something other reasons that people had not paid attention to. Something else is the Broken Window theory. Gladwell explains different factors like lack of jobs and the rise of the young population in New York City but still dismisses the fact that these were the cause of tipping increase in crime. Gladwell believes that crime is contagious, and that is why the numbers increase, and once the cause of spreading crime rates is dealt with, crime rates reduce. Gladwell mentioned "something else" as the thesis to capture the reader's attention and make them curious enough to read his entire work. Gladwell uses Wilson and Kelling's research because he believes that their research findings explained why social behavior like crime could have a tipping point. Kelling and Wilson came up with the idea of the broken window. Kelling and Wilson's Broken Window theory is in line with Gladwell's belief that simple, overlooked actions can cause a social trend.
