Ch 18 Terms: 1. Compression: squeezing 2. Tension: extension 3. Shear 4. Stress vs strain: a. Stress : force per unit area b. Strain : deformation-change of shape 5. Strike : The compass direction of a horizontal line on tilted plane (18-3, pg 353) 6. Dip : the acute angle between a tilted plane and the horizontal plane, measured perpendicular to strike (18-3, pg 353) 7. Folds (18-14, pg 354): bends or curves in sedimentary layers, lava flows, or other planar features that demonstrate that the rock body has experiences compressional stress. Folds are difficult to detect the larger the rock. a. Anticlines : (18-4, pg 354) a fold in which the limbs dip away from the axial plane. A fold in which oldest beds (lowest #s) are in the middle b. Syncline : fold in which the limbs dip towards the axial plane. The youngest beds (highest #s) are in the middle c. Axial Plane: one that cuts a fold into two symmetrical parts, each of which is called a limb d. Fold axis : line formed by the intersection of the axial plane and the planar feature of the fold d.i. Symmetrical fold: d.i.1. Axial plane is vertical d.i.2. Surface outcrop pattern is symmetrical about axial plane d.i.3. Angles of dip of opposing limbs are equal d.ii. Asymmetrical: d.ii.1.
