Luther Video Project and List of 95 Theses Project These two parts of the project will count as Quizzes #8 See Quiz Instructions at the end of the document. Clip #3: Luther Defends Himself at the Imperial Diet of Worms In 1521, after 4 years of arguing back and forth with Pope Leo X, Luther was finally called before the Emperor of Saxony (present day Germany) and by certain Cardinals (the men in red robes who are high ranking officials in the Catholic Church). The purpose of this trial was to force Luther to recant (say he was wrong) the things he had written which the Church considered heretical. His writings had become so popular with the common people of Saxony that they were becoming a threat to the Catholic Church simply by the sheer number of their protests modeled after Luther’s. When asked two questions, “Are these your writings?” and “Do you recant what you wrote in them?” Luther boldly not only does not give a direct answer, but also lectures the representatives of the Church with what he has written. (1) Notice what Luther says he writes about in the “second part” of his works. Notice what he says about the lifestyles of the popes both past and present. Does he praise them? Or chastise them? When pressed to give a simple “yes” or “no” answer to the question “Will you recant?” Luther speaks of how he will not admit his views are wrong unless such could be proven in or by Scripture. (2) Listen carefully to what Luther says about his conscience being held “captive”. What is it that Luther says holds his conscience “captive”?
