Melissa Walters Melissa Walters Van Vleck HI 209-002 Erasmus Inner Faith is Better than Mere Ritual In 1487 joined an order of monks known as the Augustinian Canons of Steyn, which he later found himself to be unsuited for monastic life. He left the order in 1517 after a papal order that allowed him to disregard his vows and return him to status as a layman. In 1495 he left to go to university in Paris to study theology. Erasmus found studying at a university under the scholastic curriculum just as displeasing as life in the monastery. Through his travels in Europe he came into contact with many intellectuals such as Thomas More and the humanist Aldus Manitius. Eventually he settled down in Louvain where he was applying the theories of philosophy to Biblical Scripture, this coupled with his reluctance to condemn Martin Luther resulted in a growing hostility for Erasmus. Erasmus’ reluctance to condemn the beliefs of Luther caused much contempt from Catholics and later he aroused the same attitude from Protestants. Erasmus favored the
