Course Description Prerequisite: ATOC 1050. This course discusses the global climate system for non-science majors, focusing on the role of the atmosphere, oceans, and land surface. Describes atmospheric circulations, ocean currents, the terrestrial biosphere, and anthropogenic perturbations to the global climate system. 3. Meetings and Places Lectures: DUAN G1B20, 3-3:50pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Prof. Lovenduski will hold office hours in ARCE 257 on Tuesdays from 2 to 4pm. Her office can be reached via the Stampede Shuttle to East Campus. Teaching assistant Sean Haney will hold office hours in MUEN E131 on Tuesdays from 5 to 7pm. 4. Grading Exam 1 Exam 2 Exam 3 Quizzes 25% 25% 25% 25% Numerical grades for the exams will be based on class-wide curves. Online quizzes will not be curved, but the lowest quiz grade will be dropped for each student. 1 5. Attendance It is expected that students will attend all lectures. Material required for quizzes and exams may be presented in lectures and not elsewhere. Lecture slides will be posted on the ATOC 1060-001 Desire2Learn webpage after each class, but may not contain all information presented in class. 6. Textbook Kump, Kasting, and Crane: The Earth System, 3 rd Edition. Earlier editions may be viable alternatives, but some material will be out of date, and section numbers may be different. Several copies of this text have been placed on 72-hour reserve in the Norlin Library. 7. Quizzes Once a week, a quiz is due on Desire2Learn (on Wednesday by 3:00pm). Registered stu- dents should be able to log into Desire2Learn (http://learn.colorado.edu) with their CU identikey.
