22:00 Lecture 2:  Book reviews: Overview of the book’s central argument and its supporting thread rather than a blow- by-blow description  Your own intelligent arguments about what of the books seem compelling (based on  what evidence), what arguments do not convince you (critical thinking) Synthetic: place your arguments about the book in relation to other books you’ve read in  the course (ex: arrival city) Good prose style and structure, proper tone  Main themes: Arrival cities are cities within cities: neighborhoods of immigrants in the destination city  where families of similar village/regional background cluster together  Ethic enclaves. Not random people coming together. People come from a variety of  reasons Labor migration takes on different forms depending on the relationship among sending a  receiving geographies Arrivals are good both for the destination and the origination geographies  Governments don’t control migration or urbanization: migration and urbanization control  governments.  Flooding labor markets. Social forces and economic forces are beyond us.  Nations do not migrate, but rather, regions and villages do.  “social and economic networks are push and pull factors.  Circular migrations Circular migrations-seasonal movements of workers from countryside and cities, then  back again, by harvest and construction seasons  Chain migrations “set of related individuals or individuals who move in tandem from one place to another  via a set of social arrangements in which people at the destination provide aid,
