March 21, 2012 I. Eating Disorders a. What is an eating disorder? a.i. Characterized by severe disturbances in eating behavior AND / OR a.ii. Obsessive fear of gaining weight, excessive emphasis on weight and shape a.iii. Eating disorders a.iii.1. Anorexia nervosa a.iii.2. Bulimia nervosa a.iii.3. Eating disorder not otherwise specified a.iii.3.a. Most get diagnosed b. Criteria for Anorexia b.i. Refusal to maintain healthy body weight for age and height b.i.1. Check BMI b.i.1.a. If 17.5% or below = anorexia range b.ii. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight b.iii. Undue influence on self-evaluation or denial of the seriousness of low weight b.iv. Amenorrhea in postmenarcheal females b.iv.1. Females stop have their periods for at least three consecutive periods b.iv.2. Because males do not have periods get knocked down to EDNOS b.iv.2.a. Suggested for DSM-V: getting rid of Amenorrhea criteria b.iv.2.a.i. Include physical consequences of starvation b.iv.2.a.i.1.Lanugos
