Aleena Khan 8329709042 BUAD 304 – 14764 Lecture Assignment #1 01.27.2012 During my junior year of high school, I was panicking about still not knowing which major I wanted to apply for in university. I have always been torn between pursuing either business or media; therefore prior to discovering USC’s BCA program where I can now study both fields, I decided to apply for internships to discover which area of study I enjoyed most. Writing has always been a strong passion of mine, therefore I found myself applying to five, highly established magazine companies in Dubai, where I was living at the time. I knew I only wanted to intern for a widespread, popular magazine, so I purposely ignored the smaller magazine branches, who were also looking for interns. Alas, I was selected to intern at Time Out Magazine; aware that Time Out also had branches in New York and London, and that it was very highly proclaimed internationally, I immediately accepted the offer. Unfortunately, I did not realize that ‘big magazine label’ did not necessarily mean ‘amazing experience’. I was disheartened to find that the atmosphere at the magazine’s office was completely different than I expected. Within the first day of the internship, I immediately realized that I did not fit in with the Time Out Magazine culture.
