Axia College Material Appendix E Critical Analysis Forms Fill out one form for each source. Source 1 Title and Citation: Capital Punishment Exacerbates Violence Grant, Robert. "Capital Punishment Exacerbates Violence." Current Controversies: Capital Punishment . Ed. Mary E. Williams. San Diego: Greenhaven Press, 2005. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center . Gale. Apollo Library. 22 Nov. 2009 1 Identify the principal issue presented by the source. The principle issue presented by the source is the viewpoint of capital punishment is essentially subject of this source is capital punishment. It presents the viewpoint of capital punishment as violent revenge against those who commit crimes such as murder. The question is, are we just interested in vengeance and does capital punishment actually exacerbate violence? 2 Identify any examples of bias presented by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. I am able to identify examples of bias just as the way the author worded some of the article. Although there is no specific concrete evidence of bias, the article does seem to be slanted so that the reader is able to see the author’s opinion on capital punishment without him actually saying it. One vague example I was able to identify was found in the following statement: “But the reality is that severe punishment isn't working.” The author is saying that capital punishment is a severe and cruel punishment which is not working to solve the problem of violence. 3 Identify any areas that are vague or ambiguous. provide specific examples derived from these other countries mentioned on exactly what difficulties they are having and how it applies to the subject of capital punishment. 4 Do you find the source credible? Explain your reasoning. I believe the author provided plenty of facts and information. He provided statistics to back up his claims in the article. The facts presented go along with my own personal observations and beliefs on capital punishment. I do find the source credible mostly because of his own personal and professional background. He is an attorney and a former judge who also teaches American government. 5 Identify and name any rhetorical devices used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. “Retributive justice means that the criminal must be made to pay for the crime by a crude mathematics that demands the scales of justice be balanced; this appeals to humanity's basest animal instincts and ancient demands for an eye for an eye, a life for a life.” The word “crude” in the sentence is a Hyperbole. This word is added to the
